司马法是重要的先秦时期军事著作之一。商周秦汉的大司马可以理解为现代的国防部长，司马法从字面上解释就是国防部颁发的作战条例。这些条例据说是齐国司马穰苴整理成文，是现存最古老的军事思想，比大名鼎鼎的《孙子兵法》还要古老。它保存着春秋前期的一些非常古典的作战原则，有浓郁的贵族色彩，如“逐奔不过百步"，"纵绥不过三舍”。此书讲军礼的地方甚至超过兵法的部分，典型的三代兵法的化石。
