Description
This app shows over 600 black-and-white photographs taken mostly in 1942 by Andreas Feininger, one of the most famous photographers working for the US Office of War Information (OWI). Each photo shows the Library of Congress caption and date.
An internet connection is required. The images dont fill your Macs screen, but do leave room for the extensive captions (see the screenshots).
In 1942 the Office of War Information (OWI) hired Feininger to photograph factories producing weapons and instruments for the war. This app shows essentially all of Feiningers OWI photographs.
You can view the photos in an grid (with captions), one-by-one, or as a slideshow. You can also order prints.
While all of these images can also be accessed on the LoC site, with considerable awkwardness, this app presents them in a much more convenient and organized way.
Andreas Feininger was born in Paris in 1909, studied and practiced architecture in Germany, and emigrated to the US in 1939. As a freelance he contributed to Life Magazine, then joined its staff in 1943. He completed 346 assignments for Life before leaving in 1962.
Feininger is well-known for his photographs of New York. He was the author of more than 30 books and was a columnist for Popular Photography from 1949-50, and Modern Photography starting in 1957. His work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Museum of Photography. He died in 1999 at 92.
