History in the Making “The Original” Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q opened its doors in Leon Springs as a meat market in 1989. It all began when “Doc” Holiday had an opportunity to bring his Bar-B-Q expertise to a neighborhood general store named “Rudolph’s”. Doc knew one thing, he wanted to create a true “barbecue joint” like the roadside stands he used to frequent as a kid. Doc was well known as a man that knew more than a thing or two about barbecuing. Doc developed his love for cooking at the age of 10 when his Mama would call him from work to give him the cookin’ instructions over the phone to prepare for dinner. As Doc began barbecuing at Rudys he put his signature on everything, from the fresh spices and slow burning oak wood to the old-style German brick pits used to cook the meat. Everything was coming together but one thing remained. Rudy’s needed something to capture its unique character. All the other barbecues claimed to be the best. So, Rudy’s was uniquely born on August 17, 1989 as “Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q”, “The Worst" Bar-B-Q in Texas! Doc started by selling brisket, ribs, pork loin, turkey, prime rib, sausage links and trout. A few months after opening, he noticed a customer putting mustard on the prime rib she had just purchased. It didn’t take long for Doc to realize that he needed to whip up some great tastin’ barbecue sauce for his customers. Doc immediately went to the local grocery store, purchased some ingredients, and cooked up a recipe of barbecue sauce that was passed down from his Mama. Hence, the birth of our World Famous “Sause” (with an ‘s’, not a ‘c’). Rudys Sause immediately caught on with locals, and soon word spread. We began shipping it all over the United States, and parts of the World! As time went on, Doc changed a few of the meat items. He added a list of sides to his repertoire, which includes our very popular cream corn that tastes like no other. “The Original” Rudy’s family consists of our original Leon Springs location, our Westover Hills location (across from Sea World), and our Selma location. Rudy’s Takeaway was developed at the locations for convenient takeout orders for lunch, dinner and personal parties. We offer delivery and catering for larger parties. In fact, we recently catered to 1,800 people feeding them in 30 minutes! “The Original” Rudy’s can handle just about anything – and all include our famous Rudy’s hospitality! We include our Military and Veterans as part of our Rudy’s family and honor them with 10% recognition on their purchases. In addition, we support our police officers and first responders with $10 special recognition daily towards their meals.
