Reviews
All reviews →Solid, but missing effective key feature
Just finished using the draft kit in an AL only Auction fantasy league. Generally, it works quite well. The classifications of players is quite good, so I can organize them into sleepers and busts, as well as several different tiers I’d be interested in looking at. The simulated standings feature is really handy, and a constant reminder that the players I picked are destined to lead to a last place finish. The fact that it’s offline is an unheralded feature, as the room where my auction was held has spotty wifi. Having information without a connection is huge. I found that using the app was generally easier than the excel-based alternatives that are common. There are two big features that really prevent the Rotowire Draft Kit from becoming a killer app for auctions though (and may even prevent me from considering it next year): First, the moment to moment management of the available picks could be significantly easier - it’s a UI from the 90’s that requires several clicks to highlight, select and create a bid for a player. When an auction is moving fast this can very easily cause you to lose track of what’s happened. This is when using paper is a BIG advantage - you can just cross out a player and write him in. Here it’s a 12 step process and the auction has moved on. I’d recommend a LOT more UI research and design to ensure this tool really does provide an edge. Finally, it’s achilles heel: the search is horrendous. There are 10 - 12 teams bidding on players. Within that group of people, someone will bid on a player that is not within the top list of available players shown on screen. So, you have to search. At first, I thought search wasn’t possible. There’s no obvious search field. Search is actually performed by selecting the player dropdown in the player card area. A maximum of 5 results are shown in the dropdown. If there are more than 5 results, the first impression is that the app is missing players. However, the small result window is also scrollable - something you have to discover by accident as there are no scroll bars. More frustrating than this is that the search doesn’t always work. Several times during the auction, it came up with no results. This happens when you spell a name wrong, but can also happen if the name was spelt right. An effective search would provide name suggestions from misspellings, and the flexibility to search for positions on teams (for when you can’t remember a player’s name). Search should be fast and easy. An actionable result is needed within seconds to keep pace with an auction draft. It’s a nice app, just needs a little help.
