《星际要塞》是以星际科幻为背景的“沙盘游戏”。玩家在《星际要塞》中的核心目标是组建武装部队、扩展军事势力。所有玩家都会分布在同一张超大世界地图上，针对有限的领土资源展开激烈争夺，并通过联盟的形式通过武力、外交等多种手段实现区域统治，最终称霸全服。宛如下围棋

玩家通过抽卡获取英雄卡牌进行羁绊组合、进阶、觉醒、升级等方式进行养成、同时也可以将卡牌进行拆解卡牌来研究和学习技能。

玩家的行为是在大地图中通过铺路连接目标资源地、并使用自己的军队攻打成功后占领。以占格子为基础规则，通过联盟聚群后，对其他玩家进行沦陷、对13个区域NPC王城进行占领，实现最终全服统一。人性在过程中相对传统SLG得到更充分展现。
