崇祯十七年，张献忠攻陷四川，于成都称帝后派人招降四川各土司，秦良玉军事力量弱小，有建议投降的，有建议转移的，但秦良玉不肯投降反王张献忠，作《固守石砫檄文》，誓与石砫共存亡。
