NMK’s first iPad application, 「NMK 100 Highlights」
The National Museum of Korea (NMK) based in Seoul is the most prominent museum of Korea with a collection of over 270,000 artifacts. NMK’s iPad app「NMK 100 Highlights」 exhibits one hundred selected artifacts of the NMK collection that date to diverse periods from the Paleolithic Age to the early 20th century.
The artifacts of choice with unmatched historical significance and artistic value include 35 pieces of National Treasure of Korea and 18 pieces of Treasure of Korea as well as 13 relics from abroad – five from China, two from the Central Asia, etc. Each artifact carries Korean and English descriptions. This app is formatted into six themes of ‘Prehistory and Ancient History,’ ‘Medieval and Early Modern History,’ ‘Calligraphy and Painting,’ ‘Sculpture and Crafts,’ ‘Donations’ and ‘Asia,’ following the flow of physical exhibition of the museum.

- Prehistory and Ancient History
Twenty two artifacts including a comb-pattern pottery, a bronze ritual artifact, a gold crown, and horse rider-shaped vessels
- Medieval and Early Modern History
Thirteen artifacts including celadon roof tiles Sumaksae and Ammaksae, the metal type of Chinese character ‘㠅’ (“bok”), the woodblock print of the “Daedongnyeojido” (大東輿地圖; “the Territorial Map of Great East”), and the royal seal of the Empire of Korea
- Calligraphy and Painting
Sixteen artifacts including the calligraphic work of Han Ho (韓濩, 1543-1605) that wrote the verse of Du Fu (杜甫, 712-770) composed after Du’s encounter with the cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu (張旭, 710-750), the Buddhist hanging scroll for outdoor rituals from Buseoksa temple(浮石寺), the landscape painting “Mountains and Rivers without End” by Yi In-mun (李寅文, 1745-after 1824), and “The Album of Genre Paintings by Danwon (檀園風俗圖帖)”
- Sculpture and Crafts
Twenty eight artifacts including statues of Pensive Bodhisattva (半跏思惟像), a ritual ewer (kundika) decorated with rainy shore pattern, the ten-story pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa (敬天寺) temple site, and a white porcelain bottle with rope design in underglaze iron-brown
- Donations
Eleven artifacts including the bronze helmet donated by Gi-jeong Son, a roof tile with beast design, “Yugasajiron”(瑜伽師地論; “The Treatise on the 17 States of the Yoga Practice”), and a sewing kit case inlaid with mother-of-pearl
- Asia
Ten artifacts including a Somaskanda statue of Shiva, Parvati and Skanda, a painting of “Fuxi and Nüwa” (伏羲女媧圖), a blue and white ewer with fruit and flower design, and a lacquer set for a bride
