Description

This application is for healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It provides easy access to COPD patient consultation tools that are available on the free educational resource COPDexchange.co.uk. The tools can help support clinicians or healthcare practitioners in COPD consultations and include the following: • Spirometry Calculator – allows healthcare professionals to derive the FEV1% of predicted from a patients FEV1 value, age, gender and height. FEV1, or forced expiratory volume in one second, is the volume of air a patient can breathe out in the first second of forced expiration. • Pack Years Calculator – calculating a smoking pack years value designed to determine lifetime tobacco exposure. • Fletcher & Peto Chart – demonstrating the benefit to the lungs upon smoking cessation. • Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator – establishing whether the weight of a patient is within a healthy range. The educational content of the application has been endorsed by the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK and Education for Health. The COPDexchange medical education initiative was developed and funded by Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd and Pfizer Ltd. From August 2012 continued development and funding of COPDexchange is by Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd only.
