Description

Take your Mac stargazing. See more with Darklight. Are you an astrophotographer? A keen stargazer? Attempting a Messier marathon? To observe the faintest objects in the night sky, your eyes need to be dark adapted. That means you should avoid all artificial light. But what if you want to use your laptop? Some astronomers cover their screens with a plastic film called Rubylith. This turns the display red — many people believe red light is less harmful to your night vision than other wavelengths — but has little control over the brightness of the screen. Not only does Darklight mimic the Rubylith effect, it also gives you more power over the brightness levels of your Macs display. Darklight turns your display red — just like Rubylith — or green, and using the brightness control, you can darken the screen more than ever before.

Works great using Mavericks 10.9.2 on MacBook Pro w/Retina display. Also works when using Windows VM with Parallels.

VERY HELPFUL

Thank you so much for making this app. Being an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer, I use my laptop all the time outside. The problem though, as you know, is that the brightness and color of the laptop screen can ruin my night vision. You should’ve seen what I was doing before this… I had my laptop screen wrapped with transparent, red wrapping paper and it was a nuisance putting it on and taking it off. In short, your app is not only tremenously helpful, it saves me time and wrapping paper.

Just what I was looking for...

Awesome app - Simple and elegant. What can I say? It turns a bright screen into a night-friendly display!

Perfect for theater

Chuck the Merciless · 11 years ago

I downloaded this for use in theater sound and light operations. We had a tech table in the back of the theater, not a real booth. The light from my screen was forcing my light crew eyes to accommodate, making it difficult to see onstage action during set changes and at the same time let them see their scripts and board. Going with Darklight fixed a lot of problems. More than just for astrophotography!
