Description

Desktop Earth is a wallpaper generator. It creates desktop backgrounds that are accurate representations of the Earth. The imagery is based on NASAs Blue Marble Next and Earths City Lights. Day and night is accurately represented depending on the Suns overhead position, which depends on the time of day and the day of the year. - Snow cover and foliage change with the seasons. - Accurate celestials: the Sun, the Moon and thousands of stars depicted in their correct position - Spherical, Moon-centric or flat (plate carrée) views - Real-time cloud imagery from satellite data - 33-megapixel (8192x4096) textures so it looks perfect even on 4K monitors

Really Cool App

MPWorthMcEwan · 10 years ago · v3.2

This is a beautiful app that lets you see what the earth really looks like in real time. You can set how often it updates in order to minimize impact on system resources and bandwidth. One drawback is that it automatically becomes the default desktop background in ALL of your spaces—so you cannot have other desktop backgrounds for different spaces. It would be nice to be able to use other desktop backgrounds for other spaces, while still using DesktopEarth for others. Overall, well worth it.

Very impressive. lots of options. beautiful

I like it, amazing app!

Nice background renders but screen saver lacking, no support site.

In a nutshell: Though the app does what it says it will do, and does it fairly well (the day and night Earth images are indeed beautiful), I would give the software a higher rating of 4 stars or more if the companion screen saver, downloadable directly from the developers website, would function properly and that there was at minimum email support for this app. The desktop background part of the app works well. The preferences let one change view zoom levels, latitude, angle of view, X and Y offset on youre screen and finally sun atmosphere reflection which gives a glow to the circumference of earth, especially with the night view. The super imposed satellite cloud coverage images also add a nice touch. This “part” of the app works out well and installation from the app store went well…but... One thing that you may have trouble with, as was my case, is the separately available companion screen saver portion of the software. On system 10.10.5 the screensaver product (which only functions when the app is installed) does not work and gives an error stating “You cannot use the DesktopEarth screen saver with this version of OS X". The bare-bones website has no contact information nor help or FAQ to let you know whats going on. You are, shall we say, left in the dark as to how one can resolve this issue. That said, the app will be staying on my machine but it would be nice to have the screen saver part of this software combo working.
