This app (and its more mature sister app Birds Eye) are wonderful examples of a new style of electronic field guide harnessing the full power of the online resources available. Using this Dragonfly app, I can find what dragonflies have been reported near my present location. I can see excellent photos and learn details about each species. I can also submit my findings, contributing as a ‘citizen scientist’ to desperately-needed deeper knowledge. I’m already loving the app, and look forward as it matures!
wonderful!
An excellent resource that Ive been waiting for for too long! Wonderful photos, info, and date-specific information - even recent sighting maps for recently-submitted species near me! A couple of notes for improvement: 1) please, please supply clasper/hamule/genital plate diagrams or photos for species in tricky groups like Bluets! A generic adult shot will not allow you to ID many odonates, even if youre and expert. 2) maybe I am ignorant, but I cant figure out how to submit sightings through the app. either this feature is hard to find (should not be) or does not exist, which would be silly. What better medium to collect sightings than through a cell phone app, that knows GPS and time automatically?
Deleted immediately. Didnt last 5 minutes on my phone
No app should require you to enable locations services. If I just wanted to browse species, I cant unless location was enabled. Worse, I could not even get to browse species. I wants me to create an account. Why? Why do I need to have an account to browse species? None of my other field guides require this. Some suggest it and add an extra screen to navigate through which is bad enough. But this one wont let you proceed unless you register. Just buy Ed Lams book on dragon and damsel flies. It does want to know where you are and doesnt require an account.
Great for finding locations
Very useful to find dragonfly locations near you; good life list feature. Not much help for ID. Room for improvement on OC synch.
❤️
Amazing and well done. Thanks Guys !!! It would be nice if more of humanity would help the world out a little & utilize such wonderful apps as this
Very Helpful
Dragonfly ID has helped me have a much more productive year in terms of whittling away at some of my Lifelist goals. Ive been able to find and photograph several speciesi would not otherwise have found on my travels but also not far from home. Its not perfect but a very useful tool and still being developed so Im looking forward to additional enhancements!
Great app!
I have used this app for about a week now and think it is a very powerful tool for folks who are frustrated by the books that eschew color and color patterns for things like "male appendages" and "female subgenital plates". While I dont deny the relevance, but they assume that you are looking at pinned specimens that have lost their color and they are hardly friendly to those who wish to just ID the bug in the back yard! The location tools are a great innovation aid to shorten the list of possible species you must consider at any one time. If you want to browse species, that can be done with the "find by name" feature. I look forward to watching this tool develop further. Great start!
