Fregellae was an important Roman colony located on the Via Latina near the left branch of the Liri river. The city was probably founded by the Oscans and then occupied by the Volsci, before the destruction by the Samnites in 330 BC; in that year the people of Fabrateria Vetus (modern Ceccano) sought the help of Rome against the Samnites and in 328 BC a Latin colony was established near the site of the Volscian Fregellae.
