Description

"Because the retina is already a small part of an already small organ, even fewer have the confidence and skill to examine and diagnose retinal disease. iEye Retina aims to ameliorate this by teaching some of the most clinically relevant conditions affecting the retina... In short, iEye Retina is a delightful little app that is best suited for medical students seeking to improve their ophthalmoscopy skills." -www.iMedicalApps.com ********** "Reasoning is over-rated. In time, you will know an abnormal retina not because you reasoned your way to the answer, but because you have seen it before. When confronted by Grandma you dont stop and think, "Hmm, elderly woman, short, white hair, smells funny... AH! By this train of thought, this is Grandma!" No. You know Grandma because youve seen her before." -Dr. Larry Hansen, Professor of Pathology, U.C. San Diego School of Medicine ********** DESCRIPTION: iEye Retina is an exciting, practical application that teaches you how to recognize abnormal retinas with an ophthalmoscope. Without a doubt, the images contained in iEye Retina’s library will be seen in clinic. The abnormal retinas are presented in a rapid quiz format and are organized according to clinical relevance and which will be encountered most frequently. For each image, you have the option to highlight key findings that make retinal pathologies distinguishable. iEye Retina also includes options to create custom quizzes and to see specific images from the collection. ********** USERS: Repetition is the branding iron of knowledge and this application may help make healthcare providers better at recognizing abnormal retinas. Students of all backgrounds, including medical, nursing, paramedic, emergency medical technician, pharmacy, undergraduate, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, will discover that iEye Retina is an enjoyable and efficient way to learn. Professionals, including MDs, DOs, PAs, NPs, RNs, NDs, paramedics, EMT-Bs, DPTs, OTDs, MPTs, MOTs, residents, and interns, will find that iEye is a fun, interactive way to brush up on fundoscopy skills. Medical students studying for Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) will find iEye Retina extremely high yield in preparing for the multimedia questions. In addition, iEye Retina is straightforward and can be used by anyone interested in learning about common eye problems and conditions. From Wikipedia.org: “Ophthalmoscopy (funduscopy or fundoscopy) is a test that allows a health professional to see inside the fundus of the eye and other structures using an opthalmoscope (or funduscope). It is done as part of an eye examination and may be done as part of a routine physical examination. It is crucial in determining the health of the retina and the vitreous humor.” ********** REQUIREMENTS: Compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. Requires iPhone 3.0 Software Update or above. ********** CONTACT: [email protected] ********** MORE : iEye Retina was also created to remind healthcare providers that an undilated ophthalmoscope exam can diagnose the leading causes of visual impairment in the United States while they are still asymptomatic. Though often omitted, patients with eye and/or vision complaints or those receiving a thorough history and physical should receive an ophthalmoscopic examination. Because presenting symptoms and/or signs amongst ocular and neuro-ophthalmological conditions can be similar and easily confused, it is important to refer patients to an Ophthalmologist if there is any uncertainty with regards to findings.

Finally an app to practice ophthalmology! This will no doubt have value in both the didactic years and clinical years of medical school and even for the practicing physician. Thank you!

Great app for any medical students

MISHOOL · 14 years ago

After playing around on this app for 10 minutes, I can say that I would definitely recommend this app to all my friends or anyone whos a medical student (or any student in the health care professions) and heres why: Pros: - Ive never been able to see the whole retina with an ophthalmoscope, due to patient non-compiance, crappy instrument, or maybe poor technique on my part. The pictures in this app are amazing and show the whole retina. - It has good coverage of a variety of diseases seen not only in the real world, but also frequently tested on the shelfs and step tests. - The program actually highlights the area of the retina you need to pay attention to and it also can switch to a normal retina so you can compare the two. - No need to desperately google anymore to find a picture of "drusens" or "hollenhorst plaques." Cons: - My main gripe with the program is that even though it highlights the important spots on an image, it doesnt let you know which spot correlates to what finding, so you have to actually go ahead and read the description to figure out what the pathology is. Overall, I would give it a 4.5 if iTunes had one due to the con mentioned above. However, I cant do that in iTunes and the program is really helpful and very unique, so I gave it a 5.

Im a second year medical student and finding this app extremely helpful in learning the different pathologies of the eye. Its nice because the format is very clean and everything is in one place. Also just in time for studying for the USMLE Step 1. Highly recommended!

Eye Pathology Made Easy!

UCSD 2nd year Med · 14 years ago

This app is an amazing and easy way to learn eye pathology! It has great "reference" and "quiz" settings that allow you to learn the path and test yourself on retention. It also has great features that highlight the important aspects of the pathology of each picture, and allow you to compare it to what normal should look like. Perfect app for board and clinical preparation!

A great resource for brushing up on what to see inside the ophthalmoscope. Good not only for board studying, but for taking good care of patients. Thanks for a great app!

Convenient Review of the Retina

werty098 · 14 years ago

As a medical student, my education in the physical exam has been rather limited when it comes to the fundoscopy. I have not encountered many patients with pathological findings, and I have a difficult time learning the defining characteristics of a finding when I see if for the first time. With iEye, I can review the characteristic features of difficult diseases beforehand, so that when I look at a patient, I have a better idea of what Im looking for. Since it is an iOS app, I dont have to worry about lugging a heavy book around with me, I can review fundoscopy whenever I have time for as long as my battery lasts. Great application!
