Terakoya education system teaches students with reading, writing, and calculating using abacus (soroban). (The book which Ninomiya Sontoku read was ‘Daigaku’) At the early age of 5, Yoshida Shoin was known to have memorized Shishogokyo. He did not understand those books at that age, but gradually understood the meanings as he grew old. The Kanji flash card application follows the same concept. Initially, the child is trained to memorize how to read kanji and words without understanding the meaning.
