The topic was, “How Music Has Blessed My Life.” In preparation, I thought back over the years—I remembered the excitement of discovering moms old guitar tucked away in the back of a closet, learning my first three chords, and writing my first song! I relived the nervousness of performing on a local TV station for the first time, albeit at three o’clock in the morning; all the songs, each one a hit—at least in my mother’s opinion; the silly songs, the love songs, the sad songs, and spiritual songs—songs for family and friends, songs for the love of my life, including those I wrote for her before I was brave enough to say “I love you”—and the songs for our Savior, who gave all that He had to give. Before this experience, the thought had never occurred to me that the songs I have written over the last 40 years have become a journal of my life. Until now, I have kept much of this journal to myself. In this book, I will share it openly with anyone who cares to read or listen. All the stories and songs were inspired by real life. In the process of looking back on memories near-forgotten, I have been reminded of so much good that exists—in the world, in the people I have encountered, and, yes, in my own family. I hope as you read and listen to Life in the Key of Gibson, you will be taken back to the sweet and simple moments in your own life and remember those who have influenced you for good.
