Math can be fun and cahllenging

RobertLussier · 15 years ago · v1.2

This app is out of the ordinary since it is combining speed with the mathematical aptitudes of the person playing. The missions can be visualized by categories (Numbers, counting, time,US money, shapes/patterns, add/subtract, multiply/divide, challenge) or by difficulty (beginner, novice, intermediate, advanced, expert, genius). My son, Dominic, was the guinea pig for this review. He is 7 years old and is currently doing grade 1 work in maths. He is not as rapid as me to select his numbers and I sat next to him to explain some of the requests made. However, I think he did well for his level of learning. He loved the fact that he could pick his own avatar and make his own rocket. You also have the possibility of earning more money by answering mathematical questions so that you can improve your rocket or built another one. The animation provided for this app is very creative, colourful and fun. Music is even added in the background as well as cheering when the rocket comes back down. The kids are not the only ones who can participate to the missions included in this app – adults can too. And to make it more competitive, how about putting a competition between you and your child? If he or she beats you in the score, then you can be sure that you will hear from it for a long time. The only thing that disappoints me is the fact that the section on money is not universal or at least that I cold choose my country from a selection. I have nothing against US money but in Canada our paper and coin money is quite different. It would be nice to have the choice to pick something. Mind you, we travel to the US quite regularly so in a way it is good that my kids learn more about the US money as well as our own Canadian money. This app is reasonably priced and honestly I wouldn’t hesitate one second to purchase it just to have the kids practice their speed in answering mathematical questions. An app like this will help them put their lessons in practice and help them to answer rapidly the mission specifications. Rocket Math is an universal app which means you can use it for the iPhone or the iPad.

Great app for grade 1 math

Excellent app for early to grade 2 math.

Decent

This app is good for kids and the difficulty level makes it fun for adults too. I do not like that the money section is in USD though, if it is available in Canada it would be nice to have Canadian currency. My kids need practice learning about Canadian coins, not the backs of American coins. I think if you are going to have money in your app it would be good to have the currency of whatever countries the app is available in.

I love rocket math

What We Liked: Rocket Math saves the rockets, medals, and money for up to five players – always a must in our large homeschooling family! You can turn the sounds and music on and off, and there are just a LOT of educational math concepts available for practice in this app. When you are earning money to build your rocket (the drill section), if you choose an incorrect answer, all of the answers disappear except for the correct one, allowing children to correct their mistakes. The fun game physics make it exciting to see your rocket launch, fall to earth, and bounce all over the place upon landing – there is always the challenge of trying to build your rocket to launch higher or stay airborne for longer for the engineering minded child. What We Didn’t Like: The text font is unconventional and a bit tricky to read, particularly for early readers, and while some of the concepts are very simple (tapping on pennies for example), the lack of spoken instruction makes this app a difficult one to use for children who aren’t yet reading independently. Overall: There are few game-based math apps that you can use to practice such a wide variety of math skills as you can with Rocket Math – and for only $0.99, it’s easy to see why this app is such a fast favorite amongst homeschooling families. If you are learning a primary level math topic, you’ll likely find one or more mission in Rocket Math to use as a fun educational supplement AND your children will have fun blasting into space while they do it. Disclosure: I received a promo code of this app to review.

Fun for the kids!
