The app needs a serious update. The latest section lists one article from the last month. Annoying paying for an app that isnt maintained at all. Come on M&G, you can do way better!

Some flaws, but a great app from one of the worlds great papers

The Mail & Guardian is a beacon of quality journalism and vigorous reporting in an otherwise rather bleak South African media landscape. The M&G is also a pioneer in digital publishing in this country, and its not surprising that they are the first SA publication to release a good-looking and useful app for the iPhone. There is a lot of content here, from news to art to opinion, as well as cartoons by Zapiro, news photographs, and a selection of video news reports. Im not sure why the app is called M&G Breaking News, when its not really a breaking news app at all. Breaking news is now the province of Twitter, so a news app like this cant really hope to compete. But thats just a minor niggle. This app is, in effect, the full M&G, with enough content to last for a whole week of reading. Some other minor niggles: the typeface is a bit on the small side, and there appears to be no option to adjust the size. There is also no option to change the typeface from the very bland choice here, Helvetica, I think. Still, it is readable. Its also very nice to have the M&Gs Thought Leader blogs as a section on the site, but not so nice to have to read the blogs on Safari after only a paragraph on the app. Other than these niggles, Im really pleased with this app, and hope it takes its rightful place as a must-buy for all who are interested in the world as seen from a South African perspective!

I installed the update, and Zapiro works now! Thanks for fixing it!

A big M&G fan

Im a big M&G fan, and I love their work. This app is certainly useful, and makes it easier to read the online M&G articles (as opposed to opening safari and reading the identical articles on the homepage). Two issues though, that I think need attention: 1. Implement a comments system, or better still, show the comments that are already on the M&G homepage articles. The articles are identical, so it would be nice to be able to read the existing comments, instead of waiting to turn on the Mac to get my fix of the Dave Harris comedy show. 2. This one is the deal breaker: no offline viewing mode?? This is a bad oversight. When out of WiFis reach, I would like (or expect, rather) to be able to read the articles that should have been saved to some sort of cache. This is standard on any iDevice news app, see Huffington Post for example. With the huffpost, I can simply refresh it before walking out the door on my way to work, and all articles are stored and ready for reading, even if there is no WiFi or signal. M&G must update to offer this, it is a basic feature that the developer should have included. Thanks.

App expensive and no great features!

The M & G is a great weekly newspaper. But the app is disappointing. No push content on breaking news or Fridays lead stories. And for the amount of money you pay, youd expect a better app. The News24 app is a much better alternative/source of news and it is able to push breaking news to your iPhone! Ohhhh....and it is free!
