NATS would like to share our latest innovation in our work to help General Aviation pilots avoid infringements of controlled and restricted airspace: NATS Flight Prepare. NATS Flight Prepare consists of a simple risk assessment, and linked flight record where details of each flight can be stored and shared by pilots via social media. Feedback from approximately 400 infringements allowed identification of human performance issues leading to increased risk of infringements. With assistance from industry experts including general aviation pilots and flying instructors, these were then translated into a series of questions and prompts aimed at reducing the impact and likelihood of infringements. NATS Flight Prepare is a tool which allows individual risk factors to be routinely assessed quickly and simply by a pilot at the pre-flight planning stage. NATS hopes pilots will use this tool to increase their awareness of their own potential to infringe controlled and restricted airspace and the factors that commonly impact their risk.
