The 15 lessons in Numbers (1) provide initial instruction or intervention on numbers and operations. The first five lessons develop number sense and conceptual understandings of number operations. As recommended by NCTM, “Students should use a variety of models and contexts when exploring whole number operations.” The lessons in this module present alternative algorithms for solving problems that involve whole number operations with large numbers. Here, the objective is not to teach the student how to perform these operations quickly, but to have them gain an understanding of the ideas behind the operations. Once they grasp the concept, the speed will come.
