Description
ORxLabels™ is a medication labeling system for anesthesia. It utilizes an Apple iPhone® or iPad® app paired with an AirPrint label printer. This allows the anesthesiologist or CRNA to print on-demand labels directly from his or her Apple® device via Wi-Fi.
The ORxLabels™ app stores a database of common anesthesia medications along with associated expiration time intervals. When the anesthesia provider taps the print button to create syringe, vial, or dilution labels, the app calculates the expiration dates and times for each drug selected. It then communicates wirelessly with the label printer to create the medication labels. Each label displays the drug name, concentration, preparation date and time, provider’s initials, and the calculated expiration date and time. Labels are printed in black and white.
ORxLabels™ is designed to meet the requirements of the Joint Commission’s 2015 National Patient Safety Goals, which are utilized in hospital accreditation JCAHO inspections. Use of this app decreases the possibility of the hospital receiving a negative score on these elements of performance, as well as enhances patient safety.
ORxLabels™ was developed by an anesthesiologist. The app is designed to be fast, intuitive, and easy to use. By having the capability to print multiple labels at once, all medication labels for a surgical case can be printed in seconds with a few taps.
By leveraging the capability of an iPhone® or iPad®, an anesthesia medication labeling system can be implemented at minimal cost, only requiring purchase of the application and an inexpensive label printer for each operating room. Thermal label printers are inexpensive, do not require ink, and label media costs approximately one cent per label.
The Basic version of the app is limited to printing 12 labels per day after the first 100 labels. The Pro version may be purchased In-App and allows for unlimited printing.
