Sight Words Hangman is an application where your child learns the most frequently used English words without sounding the words out letter by letter.

The game is simple, utilizing touch screen operations, colorful and comical graphics to persuade your child to play and learn. Sight Words Hangman begins by ”Selecting a List”, and touching the word “Repeat” to listen to the word. The child hears and views the word then makes their selection by pressing on the word that they think is correct. If the child chooses the correct sight word, then they automatically advance to the next word. If the child guesses the incorrect word, a body part of the hangman shows up on the screen and then the child is given 5 more opportunities to guess the correct answer. If the child would like to hear the sight word again, they can press the “repeat” button to hear the word again and pick another answer. The child can see their score at the end of the game so they can try to improve their score the next time.

About SightWords as stated on Wikipedia.org…

Sight words are pronounced without decoding the words spelling. Effectively, an alphabetic writing system is made into an ideographic writing system. Unfortunately, speakers of ideographic languages have to spend a much longer time learning to read because of the sheer volume of symbols they must memorize. A common first sight word is a childs given name. Beginning readers are at an advantage when they learn to read sight words that occur frequently in print such as those included on the Dolch and Fry word lists.

Suitability:
- Children who want to learn on their own
- Pre-Schoolers, Kindergarteners and First Graders
- People learning the English language
- Entertain your kids with learning
- Teachers or Parents who use flash cards

Liked it, would like some improvement

Good idea. Harder Levels would make it better. Currently the words to choose from are so different it only tests the childs ability to sound out the first letter. A level with more similar starting words would require them to read more of the word. A level with a sentence read out and homophones to choose from would be good too.

Basic App for Sight Word Practice

What We Liked: Sight Words Hangman has a simple to use, straightforward design that is easy for children to operate independently. It allows parents to choose from any of the 27 target word-lists to focus on specific groupings of words or to serve up words randomly – a nice option that builds in flexibility. The spoken instructions once the game starts are clear, well pronounced and appropriate for early readers. The app is well built and helps to develop fluent sight word recognition through repeated practice. For children who must learn to read through memorization rather than decoding, this app can offer valuable reinforcement and repetition. What We Didn’t Like: I’m not a big fan of the guessing by multiple-choice strategy that this app employs to help children practice reading. Like most sight word resources, the included words cover a wide range of both phonetically regular and irregular words making this app difficult for a phonics-oriented homeschool to use unless a child has completed all of their phonics instruction. While scores are displayed at the end of each word list, there isn’t any record of those scores kept in the app. Overall: Sight Word Hangman is a solid, well-designed app for helping children recognize high-frequency words by sight. If you teach reading with sight words, this is a simple, quality app you might want to check out for sight word drills. I received a promo code.

Great for Review

I like that the direction are read out with a full sentence. Great use of Quiz Mode, I can hear the word or turn off the sound to read the word myself.
