Text-Based vs Image-Based Subtitles: When a movie is ripped from Blu-ray/DVD disc, soft subtitles are kept, most of the time, they are not saved in Text-based files. They are saved in "VobSub (bitmap)" or "PGS" format(Image-Based). With VobSub and PGS, each subtitle is an image that will be displayed on top of the video. The problem is that iDevices and QuickTime are not able to read VobSub or PGS subtitles. So OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is needed to convert Image-Based subtitles to Text-Based. Hard Subtitles vs Soft Subtitles: Hard subtitles are part of the video itself (superimposed text), they cannot be removed or extracted, while Soft Subtitles are rendered as a separate track in a video file and not part of the video itself, so it can be switched ON/OFF and thus can be extracted.
