Closed Captions vs Subtitles:
Closed Captions are usually inter-weaved in a video stream itself during a broadcast to aid hearing impaired viewers, while subtitles are generally used to aid viewers who dont understand the language.
Text-Based vs Image-Based Subtitles:
When a movie is ripped from Blu-ray/DVD disc, soft subtitles are kept, most of the time, they are not saved in Text-based files. They are saved in "VobSub (bitmap)" or "PGS" format(Image-Based). With VobSub and PGS, each subtitle is an image that will be displayed on top of the video. The problem is that iDevices and QuickTime are not able to read VobSub or PGS subtitles. So OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is needed to convert Image-Based subtitles to Text-Based.
Hard Subtitles vs Soft Subtitles:
Hard subtitles are part of the video itself (superimposed text), they cannot be removed or extracted, while Soft Subtitles are rendered as a separate track in a video file and not part of the video itself, so it can be switched ON/OFF and thus can be extracted.

Fantastic converter!
This does a pretty good job of using OCR to convert SUP subtitles. Not perfect, but none of them are and it’s definitely better than the only other Mac-native alternative that I’ve used in some ways. I do wish it would show the results against the original subtitles to make it easier to fix errors, but I get by. I’d also very much prefer to load subtitle files by right-clicking, or at least dragging-dropping the file into the app’s window.
DO NOT BUY!
This app does not work with hardsubbed subtitles. Can not extract. Please refund my money asap.
Ne fonctionne pas.
Ne retourne que des dossiers vides. Trop cher puisqu’aucun service n’est rendu… on confine à l’escroquerie. Restée installée 10 minutes.
Subtitle Extractor
