Description

Surfing involves wave hydrodynamics, buoyancy, and momentum transfer. The surfboard planing surface reduces drag and enables trim on the wave face. Gravity accelerates the rider downslope, while buoyant force and hydrodynamic lift maintain flotation. Lateral rail engagement and fin systems permit turning via fluid flow redirection. Wave energy, originating from wind-generated ocean swells, propagates as a moving base. The surfer matches velocity, enters the wave’s critical section, and exploits the crest’s downward gradient to maintain speed. Balance, stance, and dynamic weight shifts govern stability and directional control.
