Surf Years Calculator helps you calculate lifetime surf and water exposure using a simple score called Surf Years.
Use it out of curiosity, to better understand your own time in the water, or in research and surf-related healthcare contexts.
Why Surf Years?
Most people don't surf the same way forever. Statements such as "I've been surfing for 20 years" or "I surf three times per week" only tell part of the story.
Surf Years combines frequency and duration into a single measure of lifetime exposure — making it easier to describe, compare, document, and discuss.
What you can do:
- Add home and travel surfing habits across different life phases
- Save multiple profiles (e.g. yourself, family, patients, study participants)
- Track lifetime exposure over time
- Export profiles for personal tracking or research (SYC, CSV, JSON)
- Share results with friends, researchers, or healthcare professionals

What is a Surf Year?
- A Surf Year (1 SY) is defined as 5 hours spent surfing per week for one year.
- That sounds simple. In reality, many people go through very different phases of life. Some years involve daily surfing close to home, others occasional surf trips, periods away from the ocean, or changing habits over time.
- Surf Years helps capture these changes and turn them into one consistent, comparable measure of lifetime water exposure.
