Overcrowding is a daily challenge in Canadian emergency departments (ED) that negatively effects wait times, quality of care, and health outcomes for patients. Our team has developed SurgeCon, a unique tool that helps staff (paramedicine, nursing & physicians) manage their actions during patient surges to reduce wait times and increase patients’ access to emergency medical care. This tool creates position awareness for exceptional, real-time, efficient ED care. Every two hours in our ED, a value is calculated based on patient flow criterion that immediately dictates essential actions required to manage and dissipate ED surge.
