Description
The Hutongs are a system of ancient alleys and narrow streets, which are considered one of Beijings most precious cultural treasures. Originally built when Genghis Khan and the Mongolians invaded, the Hutongs are Beijings oldest residential areas. While visiting the Hutongs, you will have a chance to see what life is like for the average citizen and to experience the Old China.
After the founding of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949, the Hutongs entered a tumultuous period that saw mass migration, destruction, renovation, and finally conversion into high end residences. In response to this rapid change, the government established protected areas to preserve Beijings culture, areas which we will see today. So put in your headphones, strap on your helmet, and get ready to see the Hutongs.
