Description

This App is a great way to discover, enjoy, be amazed by and learn about wildflowers in Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and the Western United States. As a tribute to Richard J and Marion Shaw, their daughter, son-in-law and grand children worked over a year and a half creating this app. We hope we did our parents justice in putting together this app and we know you will learn to love and appreciate wildflowers as they taught us to. Dr. Richard J. Shaw was a professor of botany at Utah State University for thirty-nine years. His research, interests and passion were with the plants and specifically the wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains. His wife Marion Abplanalp Shaw earned a degree in biology from the University of Utah and she worked in the herbariums at Utah State University and at the University of Utah. Richard and Marion spent their summers for over thirty years at Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks where Richard was a naturalist. During that time he spent taking visitors on hikes throughout the park educating them about wildflowers and the environment. He wrote a number of books and still in print, “Plants of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks”, can found in most visitor centers. Most of the pictures of wildflowers in this app were taken by Richard in the 1960s. He and Marion wrote most of the short descriptions you will find about each flower. As his daughter and son-in-law we gathered information from Richard’s research material and research resources listed below. We appreciate Greg Stone taking and giving us some of his pictures. Greg lives on the Western side of the Tetons. He is retired and takes wildflower pictures. Wes Smedley contributed some pictures for us. We too appreciate montana.plant-life.org for the information that we used on the uses of each plant. We hope you enjoy learning about wildflowers and find an interest in them as we have. This app was challenging to write but rewarding. Both Richard and Marion passed away in 2008 and we miss them immensely. Features: -Color photographs detailing the wildflowers. Most pictures taken in 1960s. -Creative menu system to browse flowers in many different ways. -Descriptions of the details of each wildflower to assist with identification. -Uses of wildflowers including edible plants, medicinal uses among other uses. -Description of when flower blooms and where to find flowers. -Search and filtering. -Real time availability of each flower without Internet connection. -App size kept to minimal for downloading through 3g networks and regards of space size on your iPhone or iPod Touch. -Works on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. -First name, last name and scientific or botanical name of every species. -Family name flower belongs to. -User friendly and keeping app simple for all to use was the goal of the developer. -Large thumbnails for easier identification. -Large text used where applicable. -Multiple pictures of every flower. -A donation for each purchase will go to United States National Parks. -Panning, pinching and rotation gestures recognized. Your mother probably has told you many times, "Dont pick those flowers". As you discover wildflowers in National Parks and other wilderness areas please heed your mothers words and dont pick the flowers. Leave them for others to enjoy and leave them to seed other flowers for future years to come.
