Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the incidence is increasing in many countries. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for disabling or killing many relatively young and otherwise healthy individuals, often without any warning.
Are you at imminent risk of a heart attack or stroke?
Do you have risk factors that will increase your chances of developing cardiovascular disease in the future?
This app is designed to determine the likelihood of a cardiovascular incident occurring in the next five years, based on a series of known risk factors. Comprehensive information on all of these risk factors is included in the app.
Completion of a simple questionnaire allows the user to determine their level of risk. Individual risk factors are identified and quantified.
Individuals who are identified as “at risk” can seek medical advice and take preventive action such as medication or changes in lifestyle. This will enable them to prevent or postpone a potentially imminent cardiovascular incident.
An activity monitor is included in the iPhone version of the app. It detects your movements and reminds you to perform some form of exercise after a period of inactivity.
The risk factors and scoring system used in this app were derived from
- Framingham Heart Study risk equation
- Joint British Societies (JBS) / British National Formulary (BNF) risk charts
- Scottish ASSIGN scoring system
