It does a simple thing well
Im a Unix guy. I like utility programs that do one or two closely related things simply, and efficiently. This program follows that ethos. It presents a simple scrollable list of countries with their associated ISO 3166 two letter country codes. It adds a closely related bit of information, the international long distance calling code. That would be OK, rating 3 stars. Why did I give it 4? It also allows sorting by either country, or calling code. It allows searching by typing a few characters and it incrementally narrows the list as you type more. Thats a little better than OK. However, it cleverly narrows the list to include all entries that have your matching string anywhere in the listing, not just the initial characters of the country name, for instance. For example, I live in Canada, so I tested that. I enter "C". Lots of records have "C" in them. I add "A". Thats still a lengthy list, with the first one being "American Samoa" and "Canada" is the fifth one, just beyond the keyboard, so I dont see it without scrolling, but this would be enough typing if I was looking for "Cambodia". I add "N" and "Canada is the second in the list, showing the ISO 3166 code as "CA" and the international calling code "+1". Thats enough typing. But why is this such a good idea? Who wouldnt type the first characters of a country name? Well, I dont know how all country names are spelled. I didnt know how to spell "Djibouti", until I looked it up. But, I was pretty sure that it ended with "uti" and I found it! Here is a program that has included some good human factors practices to enhance the efficiency. One review in a competitive program said something like "I touched the country name and it didnt go anywhere!". Im not sure where one would expect it to go, but it seems that people expect these programs to do something once you get to what you were looking for ... other than having just supplied some information. Well, this one does something for those people. It pops up a balloon that contains the information that you just went looking for, in a slightly larger font. What more do you want? That said ... wouldnt it be cool if it showed you the country on the "Maps" application? Thats still closely related information for a simple, efficient app ... isnt it? Something like that would give it 5 stars instead of a very respectable 4.
