Description
In this game you will use your imagination to turn Bowdoin’s Quad into an icy Arctic landscape. By following the route marked by red pins, you will scale glaciers, discover, make scientific discoveries, and look for new lands.
In this game, you want to:
1) Follow the directions, which will take you to each of the spots on the map marked by red pins. You need to arrive at each spot in the correct order.
2) When you arrive at the destination, the pin will turn purple and your phone will vibrate.
3) When all the pins are purple, you have won! Return to the Arctic Museum to collect your prize.
The game is based on the Crocker Land Expedition, led by Donald Baxter MacMillan one hundred years ago. Crocker Land was the name of a land that Robert E. Peary thought he saw northwest of the known Arctic islands in 1906. Some scientists also thought there should be land there. In 1914 MacMillan and his companions traveled by dog sledge over the sea ice to see if they could reach this undiscovered land. In the end, Crocker Land turned out to be a mirage. The team members accomplished a lot in their years in the Arctic, though. They mapped parts of the coastline and in some cases were the first people to visit fjords and lakes. They also collected many scientific specimens.
You can learn more about the expedition in the Arctic Museum. This game is your chance to imagine what it would be like to be on an expedition of your own. Be sure to choose your route carefully and as always in the Arctic, keep an eye out for polar bears!
