Description
Systematic Exposure is a technique that has been proven to be very effective for the treatment of specific phobias. This method involves the presentation of a fearful item, in this case spiders, along with a learned relaxation technique.
Over time, you have “learned” to overreact when you see a spider. You may run from the room or freeze until someone arrives to help you. This learned behavior is counterproductive and is often quite embarrassing. Systematic Exposure helps you decrease your reaction to spiders when you happen to see one.
You will practice relaxation techniques and you will be exposed to spiders. Over time, your reaction to the spiders will decrease. Instead of overreacting to the spider, you will learn to be more relaxed when you see spiders. In other words, you will “unlearn” the extreme response.
