Renal function, in nephrology, is an indication of the state of the kidney and its role in renal physiology. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) describes the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney.
Normal GFR varies according to age, sex, and body size, and declines with age. Clinical practice guidelines (NICE Guidelines and The Renal Association - UK) recommend the MDRD Study equation to estimate GFR.

**The formula used in this calculator may not be accurate when used in children, elderly patients, specific ethnic groups, pregnant women, those with unusual muscle mass, body habitus, and weight (e.g. morbid obesity or amputees) and patients with a normal GFR.
