Description

It doesn’t matter what you call it—War Between the States, War of Northern Aggression, Second American Revolution—the Civil War was the formative event of America’s modern history, and will likely persist in our national memory long after mankind’s final iPhone loses its last ounce of battery life and clicks off forever. Until that day, however, take full advantage of technology by downloading the American Civil War Locator app to find hundreds of Civil War landmarks across the country. All significant battlefields, forts, historic houses, campsites, and cemeteries have been mapped and described to give history buffs and schoolchildren alike an interactive tour of the era. Simply enter your location or choose a new one to view nearby landmarks that played a role in deciding the outcome of the war and the future of the country. But that’s not all: to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the wars first shots ringing out over Fort Sumter, MapMuse is proud to release version 1.3 of the American Civil War Locator app, which will include over 100 upcoming commemorative events for you to partake in. As President Lincoln mightve put it... "...We here at MapMuse highly resolve that the American War Civil War Locator shall not be re-launched in vain; that this app, under iTunes, shall have a new database of 150th anniversary commemorative events; and that this database of the people, by the people, for the people, shall only grow larger." In modern speak for all ye simpletons: American Civil War Locator Version 1.3 will map all upcoming exhibits, conferences, lectures, and celebrations being thrown in honor of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary. As has been the case with battlefields and other historical sites, users are encouraged to submit new commemorative events as they hear of them. Just hit the “Add” button at the bottom of the screen and follow the directions; your submission will be reviewed for accuracy and added within 48 hours. You can also add locations by going to www.mapmuse.com.

As far as travel/mapping apps go, this one seems to get the job done. I downloaded it before I took my son down to Fredericksburg this past weekend (obligatory trip for ALL Civil War buffs). While the main battlefield was easy enough to find with road signs, the app showed me the way to (and gave background info on) some other neat attractions nearby like Chatham Manor and the National Cemetery. I havent used it for any other areas yet, but judging from its Fredericksburg locations it seems to have a decently-sized database. Ill try to post an update after the next trip I take.

Useful application!
