Description

Step into the pages of Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language—the only mainstream dictionary of its day threaded with thousands of Scripture quotations. Among early-nineteenth-century general-purpose references, nothing rivals its sweeping definitions, offering a front-row seat to an America where civic ideals and sacred language spoke in the same voice. Rich in scriptural and classical references, Webster’s work remains indispensable to historians, theologians, and cultural scholars. Writers and poets will likewise recognize its value: Emily Dickinson relied on these very definitions to refine meaning and nuance in her verse. This digital edition preserves the 70,000+ original definitions and their etymologies. The app’s Search, Favorites, and per-entry User Notes functions provide swift and organized access to the entire work. This latest release, offers the ability to email any definition—optionally including your own annotations—enabling easy sharing and collaboration.

Great app, wrong name

Mirsguy · 13 years ago

I have been looking for a Websters 1828 Dictionary app for a long time, and I love this one! One problem though: The app is wrongly named the "Noel" Websters Dictionary in 2 places—on the cover image and the app title. Please fix as its a bit embarrassing!

Great!

Love this dictionary! As a Christian I love how the 1828 version has definitions to words in the Bible that most modern dictionaries do not. However, I do believe it would be even better if it had a thesaurus to it as well.

I love this dictionary! I use it to witness to people right alongside with my Holy Bible. People today dont understand how the English language had changed. I point out that Satan has been changing language in order to change the Word of God. I point this out between the NIV vs. the KJV & then have people look at the differences in the definitions of the word "morality." I am very glad this book is still with us today & an app on an iPhone, no less!
